STEP 1 - UNDERSTAND

Listen and learn about the project.  Understand the problem being solved, the opportunities and any constraints.  Form a set of design requirements

STEP 2 - CONCEPTS & SOLUTIONS

Generate design solutions capable of meeting the design requirements.  Assess the options against desirability and acceptance .

STEP 3 - BENCH TESTING

Identify any parts of the design that are key to its performance and test this under normal and adverse conditions.

Refine the design as necessary and retest until acceptable reliable results are obtained

STEP 4 - PROTOTYPING

Construct prototypes representative of the final product suitable for trialling and testing.
